Routers
Modems - ADSL, Cable, Dialup

To do remote viewing of your cameras from a remote location over the internet, you may have to configure your network and the Surveillance WebCam program.

Preparation

If your are using software fire walls, consider turning them off while you configure remote access so they do not interfere with setup and testing. After re-enable and configure them. We do not support your firewall software, routers or networks or configuring them for you for free - consult their manuals and manufactures. The following is some useful information which might of help.

(1) For ADSL Modem, Cable Modem, Dialup Modem

Connect computer directly to the modem and the internet, there is no router being used. This is the easiest setup method.

Make sure Surveillance WebCam program and the Web Server program are both up and running on the local computer.

(a) For Static IP Address Systems

That is you have a static ip address which is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to your modem. Thus your computer has a permanent ip address on the internet.

From a browser anywhere on the internet just enter  http://MyComputerIpAddress/logon.htm where MyComputerIPAddress is ip address of your computer when connected to the internet. Should return the Surveillance WebCam Home Page. Click through to the Surveillance WebCam Administration Page under heading Run Remote View, click link Stream live video , with config file: 1

(b) For Dynamic IP Address Systems

Your modem's ip address changes whenever you turn your modem on or off or when you re-start your computer.

Use the Enable Send IP Address feature of the Surveillance WebCam program. It sends the ip address to our web site, whenever you connect to the internet, every 3 hours,  or whenever the Surveillance WebCam program starts.

Go to the www.fgeng.com web site, click on link, Find Your Surveillance WebCam Program on the Internet. Enter your Surveillance WebCam Remote ID, and click on link, Second Link to Your Web Site. It should be the address of your computer. Result: returns your Surveillance WebCam Home Page where you can logon to your Surveillance WebCam system.

Then click to the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration Page, and do the Remote View Automatic or Manual Method.  On the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration Page click on any of the links under heading, Run Remote View, click one of the links to start to remotely view video from your cameras.

Also see Notes below.

(2) Remote Access through a Router

Here you computer sits behind another device which is connected to the internet, so your computer is not connected directly to the internet, so you need to have the router send data to your computer. Therefore one needs to configure the router - see your router manual.

Give your computer some static ip address on your internal network, and do Port Forwarding on your router to your computer on the internal network.

Open HTTP Port on your router.

Generally it is port 80. It is need to communicate with Surveillance WebCam Web Server program. Note: if you configure Surveillance WebCam Web Server to use a different listening port then open the corresponding port on your router. ( Surveillance WebCam Web Server menu item Server,  Set Server Configuration, Listening Port).

Open Video Streaming Port on your router.

Default is port 8080. If you configure Windows Media Encoder to use a different video streaming port, then open the corresponding port on your router. See, Test Live Streaming, in the Help Documentation.

You can check which video port is being used from the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration Web Page - click on link, Get Live Streaming Video Port to connect with Media Player - it returns the video port number being used by the Surveillance WebCam program.

Other Ports - usually not necessary.

You may also have to open other standard ports on your router to accommodate sending email alarms (port 25), or doing FTP file transfers (port 20,21).

You may have to make further configurations to you router so as to allow outside computers access your computer behind the router - see your router's manual or manufacturer.

To Access Surveillance WebCam Program through Router

Make sure Surveillance WebCam program and Surveillance WebCam Web Server program are both up and running on the local computer, and that the correct ports are open on your router.

From a remote computer on the internet on the other side of the router, open up the web browser, enter http://RouterIpAddress/logon.htm , where RouterIpAddress is the ip address of the router. Result: you should get the Surveillance WebCam program Home Page, enter password if set, and click enter. Result: you should get the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration Page. If not check router configured is right.

To Start Remote View through Router

From the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration - do Stream Live Video via Manual Method

click on link, Stream Live Video with config file:1

click on link, Get Live Streaming Video Port to connect with Media Player - note the video port number returned.
(example 8080)

Open Windows Media Player on the remote computer - do menu item File, Open or Open URL and enter http://RouterIPAddress:VideoPortNumber and execute, for instance http://167.234.191.0:8080, where VideoPortNumber is the video port number noted in the previous step.  Result: Windows Media Player starts to play live video and audio from the Surveillance WebCam computer.

 (a) Router with Static IP Address

Just remember your router's static ip address. Then when from any computer on the internet just enter the following into the browser to connect to your Surveillance WebCam program,  http://RouterIpAddress/logon.htm

With a router static ip address, you could also do a Remote View  Automatic Method, instead of the Manual Method above. From the Surveillance WebCam program menu item, Send IP Address Settings, put a check mark beside, Enable Send IP Address, and your router's static ip address beside, IP/URL Address of your Router on the Internet. Click OK and do Save Configuration. Then try doing remote viewing through the browser and the Admin Page.

(b) Router with Dynamic IP Address

Enable the Send IP Address feature of the Surveillance WebCam program. It uploads ip address  every 3 hours the www.fgeng.com web site or whenever the Surveillance WebCam program starts.

Go to the www.fgeng.com web site, click on link, Find Your Surveillance WebCam Program on the Internet. Enter your Surveillance WebCam Remote ID, and click on link, First Link to Your Web Site. It should be address of your router. Result: returns your Surveillance WebCam Home Page where you can logon to your Surveillance WebCam system.

Then click to the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration Page, and do the Remote View Manual Method described above.

Notes:

(1) Sometimes Internet Service Providers (ISP's) block port 80 and do not allow communication through this port. If so then try using port 90 to communicate through. This is done by set the Surveillance WebCam Web Server to listen on port 90. To do this, on the Surveillance WebCam Web Server menu items, click on Server, Stop. Then Server,  Set Server Configuration, set Listening Port=90, click OK. Then do Server, Save Configuration. Then Server, Start Server. Now when you access the Surveillance WebCam program through a web browser, enter http://IpAddress:90/logon.htm - note the 90 tells the web browser to use port 90 to communicate. If using a router then one should open port 90 on the router and do port forwarding on the router.

(2) Clicking on links in to start, Stream Live Video with config file 1, from the Surveillance WebCam Program Administration Page, through your web browser do not work right. Then try the following:

  • (a) If not using a router: from the Surveillance WebCam program menus, try manipulating menu item,  Use Computer's Top IP Address. Re-start and try the remote view again with the browser.
  • (b) If using a router do the following: from the Surveillance WebCam program change setting Use IP/URL, and beside it enter in the IP address of your router. Click OK. Do Settings, Save Configuration. And try the remote Remote View again with the browser. Note: the links to start Remote View in the Surveillance WebCam Program Admin page will be valid as long as your router's ip address remains the same. If your router's ip address changes, then you will have to change ip address in the Use IP/URL, above again in order the links to be valid again.
  • (c) If all else fails, use the Manual Method of  for doing the Remote View, that is through your web browser put the Surveillance WebCam program into Stream Mode, then open Windows Media Player on your computer. In Windows Media Player, click on menu item, File, Open/Open URL, end enter http://IpAddress:VideoPort, then OK. Where IpAddress is ip address or your computer or router, and video port is the video streaming port e.g. 8080. Result: always can get remote view without links in the Surveillance WebCam Program Admin Page, to automatically open Windows Media Player for you.

(3) If using a router and your ip address is changing quicker than every 3 hours (sometimes every few minutes)

  • (a) Contact your ISP and get a static ip address for your router. The your router will have a permanent address on the internet so you always know where to contact it.
  • (b) Configure your router to use Dynamic DNS. Setup a DNS with some DNS server on the internet. Then every time the routers ip address changes, the internet DNS server will be updated. Then you in the Surveillance WebCam program for example set Use IP/URL = www.mycomputer.DNSserver.com.  You still need to open ports and do port forwarding on your router. Then to access Surveillance WebCam program through router and browser enter, http://www.mycomputer.DNSserver.com/logon.htm.
